Film: A City Is An Island

9 December - Melkweg, Amsterdam
20.00 - €7.50 - Free for members

We are kicking off a new series of film screenings, dedicated to music and musicians, in collaboration with Melkweg.

Opening the series is A City Is An Island, delving into Montreal’s independent music scene, directed by Timothy George Kelly. As the title suggests, this is a scene that hasn’t crossed over or mixed with the urban culture surrounding it. In a Montreal where linguistic identity is a permanent, fundamental issue, a community of talented English-speaking musicians have put down roots, attracted by the city’s cheap rents. This scene has grown into a cultural world unto itself. Warehouses abandoned in the 1990s now buzz with these autonomous but busy new arrivals, who contribute to Quebec’s cultural life even though they remain perpetually on its fringes. The film features music by some of our most treasured Montreal talents, including Sean Nicholas Savage, Mac DeMarco,Tonstartssbandht, Braids, and many more you’ll be sure to spot in the film.
