Scarlett Hooft Graafland / Shores Like You

10 September – 4 December

Most of Scarlett Hooft Graafland’s photographs take shape in distant lands, as do the images in the exhibition Shores Like You, featuring images taken over the last four years. Journeys to distant places are at the root of her work, and are often inspired by stories. The visual lightness of her work evokes an unspoiled world. But in reality things are very different. To underscore that, most of Hooft Graafland’s compositions include references to contemporary global problems. “I travel to remote places because of their unspoiled nature”, says the photographer, “but there, too, you see problems similar to those in the West, like climate change and environmental pollution. There’s no escaping them.”

In the Spirit of Nature / Spiritual photographs by Martin Gusinde, Rotimi Fani-Kayode and Mario Cravo Neto

10 September – 4 December

Spirits of life and dead haunt the photographs of the German missionary Martin Gusinde, the Nigerian photographer Rotimi Fani-Kayode and the Brazilian photographer Mario Cravo Neto. Although these three photographers have very different oeuvres, they are linked in this exhibition by the way each of them has made the visual expression of invisible powers the subject of their work. The props which their models are shown with are for the most part taken from the natural environment, making it all the more arresting how everyday objects can take on spiritual connotations when used in a ritual context.
