My Brightest Diamond – This Is My Hand

My Brightest Diamond – This is My Hand (Asthmatic Kitty)

After growing up in a musical household in Michigan and studying opera at university, My Brightest Diamond’s Shara Worden ended up in NYC. Witnessing performances there by artists like Antony & the Johnsons moved her to start writing her own songs, whose many facets sparkle with elements of opera, cabaret, classical, folk and indie rock and a generous dose of theatricality. Inspired by her adopted hometown of Detroit, marching bands and contemplations of music’s most basic functions for mankind, she set out to make her new album more percussion-heavy and to infuse it with her love of pop music more explicitly than ever. Although it’s not flawless, This Is My Hand does contain a handful of precious avant-pop gems and should bring Worden a much wider audience as a result.
